I’ve made peace with the idea that college just ain’t what it used to be. It’s not a magic solution to a career, and a good school really is pretty much the same as a bad school (with certain factors averaged in, such as the proximity of nosy grandparents.)
Today I encountered a nice enough young man at the Swedish institute. We were trading notes about favorite places around Minneapolis, and then I asked him if he was in school. Yes, sort of – and it was enough to reduce him to muttering to himself. It was a shame, as until then our interchange was lovely.
This is not the first, or second, or tenth time someone going through the community college route has reacted like that when the subject of his education was raised.
Frankly, I’m worried.
Twin Cities community colleges, what the hell are you doing to people that induces academic dementia?
